"I now ask that the citizens of Jefferson County and all the citizens of Birmingham forgive me," Germany wrote. "I owe apologies to my wife, my family, the members of my church and the friends who have stood with me during this dark hour of my life.
"I ask that you give me a second chance. I won't let you down."
Germany was the first of five former county commissioners to face public corruption charges for illicit activities while in office. Chris McNair also has been convicted but has not yet been sent to prison, while Mary Buckelew pleaded guilty and Larry Langford, currently mayor of Birmingham, awaits trial. Gary White awaits retrial after his January 2008 conviction was overturned.
Sound like this guy wants to return to the political scene one day in the future.
