Some
Vigor High School students have decided to get involved in the political
process in their local community by organizing an upcoming mayoral forum. This is a awesome move to know that they too
care about their community and what’s happening in their city.
They’ve
invited all five of the candidates running for mayor of Prichard to participate
in a public question-and-answer session at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 14 at the Vigor
auditorium, and everyone is invited to attend and it’s free of charge.
Shamaica
Lewis told local media that “People always complain about how Prichard is this
and Prichard is that, but if you don’t do something about it, then your opinion
will never matter,” said 15-year-old Shamaica Lewis, who is about to start her
junior year at Vigor and not even old enough to vote.
Teenagers
like Shamaica are concerned unlike some adults that sit on the sidelines to
watch their local government go to waste. If Shamaica had a right to vote, I
believe she would use it to make her voice heard.
The
candidates for Mayor of Prichard are Ron Davis the sitting Mayor, Severia
Campbell-Morris, a community activist; Troy Ephriam, a current city councilman
and former Council President; Teresa Fox Bettis, Executive Director of the
Center for Fair Housing in Mobile; and Charles Harden, a former Prichard mayor.
During
the forum, the students will ask questions that they have written to the
candidates. If wish more adults would think like this teenagers and get
involved in the political process of their communities and country.
The election for both Mayor and Council Members will take place on August 28, 2012 from 7am-7pm. Make sure you are registered to vote and vote.
